Planting Garlic Cloves
For planting garlic cloves, you have to start with a process known as vernalization. Here, you would be cooling the garlic by placing it in the refrigerator for quite some time. It would help in its germination and also root development.
After that, you have to plant your garlic cloves, but you have to select the correct potting mix. Here, you can opt for one that has a neutral PH level. Another excellent option is preparing them for yourself by using compost mix. You have to add sand into the mix as it would help in the plants’ growth. Ensure that the container is 12 inches deep, and you have to maintain 4 inches distance between each clove.
Here, you need to place the claws with the root portion in the soil. You can cover it with soil and even add mulch on top of it. By doing so, you can create a favorable environment suitable to grow your own garlic.
Watering the Plant
While you plant garlic cloves, you have to water them once. It would last for six to eight months. If you opt for mulching while planting garlic, it will assist in water retention as well. After a few weeks, you can test the moisture level by using a moisture meter. You can do the same using your fingers too.
Within a month, your garlic plants would grow, and you have to keep the plants hydrated. However, ensure that you are not overwatering the plants, and you have to do it based on the humidity level. It is best to water them two to three times a week as they start growing.
Grow Your Own Garlic Indoors with Care
While you grow your garlic inside your home, it grows faster. And they will be ready to harvest in less time. During the spring season, you can even switch them outdoors. As part of taking care of your garlic plants, you have to get rid of pests to improve the harvest. Even though the plant is indoors, there could be mice that might attack your plants. You can create insecticides from your home. Don’t forget to use organic fertilizers once a month to improve plant growth.
When it comes to harvesting, you can start with the greens when they are 15 cm tall. However, you have to cut them by leaving 2.5 cm. While harvesting garlic cloves, you can do that after the leaves die out.
